Mom's Second Surgery

My mom had her second breast surgery today. She had a "partial mastectomy" which means they reopened her original incision and went and removed the surround breast tissue and ducts. The re-excision is done to achieve adequate margins/clear margins (those edges without any cancer)

She has been diagnosed with DCIS - Ductal Carcinoma In Situ.

DCIS is where there are abnormal cells involving only the lining of a duct. The cells have not spread outside the duct to other tissues in the breast. Also called "intraductal carcinoma."

Mom will have a follow-up appt on Friday, February 20th and then will have to receive radiation therapy 5 days a week for 6 weeks.
